Originally based on the PS3 Media Server, Universal Media Server offers much more than most media servers on the market. This UPnP media server is fully DLNA-compliant and it offers a superior file compatibility and stability. It provides full support for DVDs, DTS and 3D SBS videos, for overscan compensation, frame interpolation and much more.

Universal Media Server comes with a tabbed user interface, on which you can make various tweaks to your server. Besides specifying one or more share folders and viewing an events log, you can also choose what renderers to use, grant access to external networks, manage plug-ins and much more. You can check the general status of the server on the first tab, where you can view the current and peak bitrates, detected renderers and the buffer's status.

The media server itself can be accessed on a web browser, from a PC, Mac and from Android or iOS mobile platforms. Streamed media files are presented in their original folders structure and you can also use a search function to locate specific items quickly. Besides your local folders, the application is capable of streaming from other sources, like DVDs, removable drives and so on. Furthermore, Universal Media Server provides full support for numerous devices, including Apple's iPhone, Sony's TVs and PlayStations, as well as various Android-powered devices.

Pros

The application is capable of streaming media from various sources over a local network. The media server can be configured without too much effort. Also, Universal Media Server provides support for all popular platforms.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to mention. With Universal Media Server's streaming capabilities, you will be able to enjoy your media files anywhere in the house, on mostly any device.
