If you are looking for an effective way to stream media files, then you should definitely try Universal Media Server. Originally based on the PS3 Media Server, this DLNA-compliant UPnP media server can deliver superior file-compatibility and stability. Compared to other media servers, Universal Media Server comes with many more features. Support for DVDs, DTS and 3D SBS video, frame interpolation capabilities and overscan compensation are just a few examples.

Universal Media Server is distributed as a freeware solution, for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Downloading the program's setup package and installing its components should not take more than a minute. It doesn't have any special requirements, but installing AviSynth 2.6 MT or later is recommended.

The software comes with a tabbed user interface, but it doesn't burden you with too many controls. Most tabs display logs and other general information. When it comes to tweaking the program's behavior, you only need to interact with a few basic options. Besides making a few startup settings and managing plug-ins, you can also choose what media files to stream, by adding their parent folders to a list.

While Universal Media Server is running on your computer, you can access your shared music remotely, on a web browser, from other PCs, Macs or mobile devices. The web interface displays your media files in the same folders and it also provides a search function.

As previously suggested, the program is capable of streaming from various sources. Also, it is fully compatible with numerous devices, like the Apple iPhone, Android devices, Sony TVs and PlayStations and many others.

Pros

You can stream media to other devices, over a network. Setting up the program is quite easy. Universal Media Server allows you to stream from local folders, CDs or DVDs and from other sources.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to mention. When it comes to streaming media, there are very few programs on the market that come close to Universal Media Server's capabilities.
